Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft
The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft, BMEL for short) is a supreme federal authority of the Federal Republic of Germany. Its headquarters or first office is located in the federal city of Bonn, its second office in Berlin.
Between 1949 and 2001, the original name was “Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry”. In the early years, the main focus was on ensuring that citizens had a sufficient supply of food. This has changed over time, so that today the main focus is on the safety and health of food and the ecological consequences of food production on the one hand, and the economic interests of farmers on the other.
